Wooden fireplace!! Painting help needed.?

Ok a friend just gave me this really nice homemade fireplace with the electric lighted logs and everything. The fireplace is painted a yucky green color with a nice wooden trim. I want to know how I can get the yucky green color off and maybe STAIN IT or can someone give me an idea of a nice color to paint over the yucky green that will still look nice..
