What does this word mean?

Back in the days when witchcraft was believed in, part of that belief system was that a sort of ghost of a person could leave a person and act on other people, always in a negative way. You find this sort of thing in Arthur Miller's The Crucible, for instance. In this manner a witch could infect another person and get them to do such things as sign the devil's book.
