Is it mating season for snails....?

I actually thought kids had thrown handfuls of pebbles over our garden fence yesterday!! When I looked closer, there was about 100 snails all going in the same direction. I have never seen this before and it was such a strange thing to see!! It was like 'The Birds' but with snails.lol. Anyone know why?
